Onnit Krill Oil Now Available!

Onnit Krill Oil Now Available!Onnit Krill oil has been available for a long while as a part of the Total Primate Care package. I can’t say exactly why it took this long, but as of last week, the krill oil capsules are now available on their own at the Onnit website. You can now build your own Total Primate Care packs if you so desire, since TPC will be sold out for at least a few more weeks.

I’ve written about krill oil on this blog in the past, but if you missed that post I’ll break it down for you as succinctly as I can. Krill oil is much like fish oil, but instead of coming from a fish, it comes from krill, which is actually a small crustacean. Krill can be found in every ocean on earth, but this is not a crustacean that you would want to eat. Krill is typically used in aquariums or as bait for fishing. Onnit krill oil is harvested from the waters of Antarctica and is tested rigorously to ensure it’s free of toxic heavy metals.

Compared to fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids found in krill oil are absorbed into the body much easier. Krill oil can reduce inflammation in the cardiovascular system, assist in weight management by reducing harmful cholesterol, and help promote healthy blood pressure. It has also shown to improve cognitive function and even mood in adolescents and adults.

I could go on about why krill oil is good for your body and why Onnit krill oil in particular is better than most (if not all) other krill oils on the market, but Onnit does a better job of explaining it all. So if you’re looking for a new supplement to add to your health regimen, or if you’re looking for an alternative to fish oil, check out Onnit’s krill oil capsules. If you’re simply looking for more detailed information about krill oil than I could ever provide, I also encourage you to visit Onnit’s website for a more scientific explanation of how krill oil works and how it can benefit you.

What is Krill Oil?

What is Krill Oil?I noticed that contained within the day and night packs of Onnit TPC (Total Primate Care) are capsules of krill oil. I like to think that I know a lot about Onnit products, both the ones currently available and the ones in the pipeline, but krill oil was something that was new to me. I’ve written about fish oil and its benefits for this blog before, but decided to investigate krill oil and its health benefits a little further.

So what exactly is a krill? Turns out that it also comes from the ocean–every ocean has krill, actually–but it’s a small crustacean rather than a fish. To be honest, it looks more like a bug and definitely not something that you would want to eat, unlike shrimp or crab. Most of the krill that’s caught is used in aquariums, as bait for fishing, and in the pharmaceutical industry where products like krill oil are produced.

Much like fish oil, krill oil is packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Unlike fish oil though, the omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are joined in a phospholipid structure rather than in the triglyceride form like fish oil. Confusing, right? What this means is that the omega-3 fatty acids are more easily absorbed into your body when you take krill oil compared to fish oil.

However, compared to fish oil, krill oil is much more expensive, and to get any substantial benefits from taking krill oil you need to take about 1,000mg per day. Most capsules contain about 300-500mg, so you can quickly go through a costly bottle when you’re taking multiple capsules per day. Fortunately, Onnit TPC (Total Primate Care) contains two 500mg capsules of krill oil which will get you to that 1,000mg threshold where you’ll get the benefits of speedier absorption that the krill oil provides. You’ll also get the added benefits of all the other supplements contained in each day and night pack, which you can read more about here.

Health Benefits of Fish Oil

Health Benefits of Fish OilEveryone has heard that eating fish can be very beneficial to the body for a number of reasons. Personally, I can’t stand the taste of fish so I tend to avoid it, with the exception of the occasional fish and chips dinner which is by no means healthy! But one way to obtain the health benefits of fish without actually eating the sea creatures is to try fish oil supplements instead.

The reason that fish and fish oil supplements are so good for the body is because they’re packed with Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids that are crucial for normal metabolism, but they cannot be created by the human body. As such, eating fish or supplementing with fish oil is crucial for feeling better and working towards living a healthier life.

So what are the benefits of eating fish oil? For one, they’re high in protein, vitamins, and minerals, yet they’re low in saturated fat. Studies have shown that people with respiratory and sinuses issues decrease the risk of shortness of breath when taking fish oil. It has also been shown to decrease the compounds known to harden arteries, leading to improved cardiovascular function over time. As an asthmatic, this was very appealing to me.

Those who desire more visible, superficial benefits should take a look at cod liver oil, such as Nordic Naturals lemon-flavored Arctic Cod Liver oil. Fish oil can help reduce the loss of moisture, leading to clearer skin. It’s also a common treatment for eczema, and can help prevent skin from aging. If you’re worried about losing your hair, the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil nourish hair follicles, leading to thicker, fuller hair, and help to preclude hair loss.
